About the Listserv
Group emails to the membership of the NSDS will now be sent using a listserv service. The listserv runs on Google Groups, part of our free Google Apps for Nonprofits account. Some advantages of using this method include:- Members of the listserv can contact the membership by sending an email to a single address (members@debatingsociety.ca), rather than a long list of addresses;
- Unauthorized email addresses cannot send mail to the listserv address (i.e. cannot spam the group);
- Joining the listserv is simple: send an email to members+subscribe@debatingsociety.ca and you will receive an email with instructions. You do not need a Google Account to use the service.
- You can unsubscribe at any time by sending an email to members+unsubscribe@debatingsociety.ca.
- An archive of all listserv discussions will be retained in a forum, preserving institutional memory.
Subscribe
Existing mailing list members
The listserv will be launched on or about January 12, 2016 (giving time for members to first read about the update launched on January 10, 2016). At that time, all existing members of the NSDS mailing list will be automatically added. Members will receive an email generated by Google Groups confirming their addition to the list. Members can unsubscribe at any time by sending an email to members+unsubscribe@debatingsociety.ca. Unsubscribe instructions are included at the bottom of every email sent from the listserv.New members
To join the listserv, simply send an email to members+subscribe@debatingsociety.ca, with anything at all in the subject and body of the message. You will then receive an email from Google Groups with instructions to reply, submitting your full name, phone number(s), mailing address, school affiliation and role (or describe your connection to the NSDS if you are not affiliated with a school). A moderator will then review the submission and add the user to the list if appropriate.You do not need to use a Gmail address or Google Account to subscribe. However, only users that subscribe using Gmail addresses or Google Accounts will be able to access the listserv archives. Feel free to subscribe to the listserv with multiple email addresses if your Google Account is not your primary email address.
Sending emails to the list
Once subscribed, whenever you send an email to members@debatingsociety.ca, your message will be sent to all members of the listserv. When you receive an email from the listserv, clicking “reply” will send your reply to the full list and your message will be added to the discussion thread. You also have the option to send a reply directly to the individual sender and not the full list; instructions for direct replies are included at the bottom of all listserv emails.Anyone who sends a message to members@debatingsociety.ca from an address that is not on the list will receive a bounce-back error message.
Unsubscribing from the list
To unsubscribe from the mailing list, simply send an email to members+unsubscribe@debatingsociety.ca from the subscribed email address, with anything in the subject and body of the message. You will be unsubscribed automatically and receive a final confirmation message.Access the discussion archive
New members may want to peruse the archive of previous discussions to catch up on the Society’s recent activities. In order to view the archive, you must subscribe to the mailing list (send an email to ) using a Gmail address or a Google Account address. Google Accounts can be created for free in about two minutes.To view the discussion archive, go to https://groups.google.com/a/debatingsociety.ca/group/members/ and log in with a Google Account email address that is subscribed to the listserv.
